Notes
Traditionally served in burger buns, Sloppy Joes are a staple of North American cuisine.
Ingredients
2 tsp. vegetable oil/light olive oil
1 carrot, grated
400g minced beef
6 slices salami, finely chopped
400g passata/chopped tomatoes with onion and/or garlic
400g mixed beans
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp. tomato ketchup
6 flatbreads
1 ball mozzarella
Handful basil leaves
Method
Heat the oil over a medium heat in a deep frying pan or a wide, shallow saucepan. Add the carrot and fry for five minutes.
Add the beef to the pan and turn the heat to high. Fry for 10 minutes, until browned, breaking the mince up as you go.
Add the salami, and fry for a further minute.
Add the passata or chopped tomatoes, and rinse with 200ml water. Bring to the boil, add the drained beans and then simmer for 15 minutes until sauce has thickened.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and tomato ketchup. Season and then taste, adding more of either sauce of you wish.
Heat the grill to medium, and toast the flatbreads.
Halve the flatbreads, and top six halves with the mince mixture. Top with a sixth of the mozzarella and grill until melted and bubbling.
Top with fresh basil, top with another flatbread half and serve two flatbreads per person.
